Bitcoin prices fell below $112,000 as Japan’s Metaplanet announced an additional 103 BTC purchase worth around $11.7 million, bringing it to 18,991 BTC, where it valued its total holdings at about $2.2 billion.
The announcement confirmed that FTSE Russell included Metaplanet in the FTSE Japan Index and that in a semi-annual review in September 2025, he upgraded from small caps to mid-term status. Index inclusion, set to take effect after the market closes on September 19th, represents a significant milestone for a company’s Bitcoin financial strategy.
“Another important milestone in our journey as Japan’s leading Bitcoin finance company,” Metaplanet CEO Simon Jerovich wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The company’s aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy aims to accumulate 210,000 BTC.
The latest purchase was partially funded through the exercise of 49,000 shares between August 18 and 22, adding 4.9 million shares to the company’s total outstanding shares, reaching 722 million shares. This funding mechanism allows for continuous Bitcoin accumulation without exhausting cash reserves while diluting existing shareholders.
Metaplanet’s inclusion in the FTSE Japan Index will create a regulated route for BTC exposure and pave the way for other Bitcoin forward companies to participate in major benchmarks. Passive flows to FTSE indexes could lead institutional capital to metaplanets and provide indirect Bitcoin exposure.
The company’s transformation from a traditional hotel group to Asia’s most active Bitcoin finance company reflects the broader trend in the adoption of Bitcoin by companies. In the past month alone, five public companies have announced key Bitcoin Treasury initiatives, including a $483 million purchase of Ming Shing Group and a $679 million acquisition of KindlyMD.
Integrating Bitcoin-heavy companies into traditional equity indexes presents new challenges for institutional investors. Passive inflows via index inclusion can increase liquidity and long-term stability, but a major movement in Bitcoin prices can create unexpected volatility for passive investors.
Eric Trump, who joined Metaplanet as a strategic adviser in March, will be attending the company’s next shareholders meeting in Tokyo in September. His involvement underscores the growing intersection between traditional finance and Bitcoin financial strategies.
As more companies adopt Bitcoin’s financial strategy, the line between traditional equity investment and Bitcoin exposure continues to blur. Metaplanet’s FTSE inclusion could serve as a template for other companies that balance Bitcoin’s financial operations with mainstream market participation.
The trend in corporate Bitcoin adoption shows no signs of slowing down. Analysts hope that more companies will announce Bitcoin Treasury initiatives in the coming months. This growing institutional acceptance, coupled with an innovative financing structure, suggests that firms’ Bitcoin holdings could become an increasingly important factor in both the stock and Bitcoin markets.
