Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ) unveils Proto Rig, the first modular Bitcoin mining system, and Proto Fleet, a free, open-source fleet management software platform, marks bold steps to drive the decentralization of mining hardware, increased operational efficiency and the return of the Bitcoin network.
The announcement came at a Core Scientific facility in Dalton, Georgia. Protriggers have already been deployed there as part of the mining fleet. The launch represents the first two end-to-end releases from Block’s Block’s suite of Bitcoin mining products and services, following the initial chip sales to Core Scientific.
Bitcoin mining hardware currently faces serious inefficiencies. Most machines are disposable and tend to break down frequently, take time to repair, take time and difficult to upgrade. These problems lead to wasted power, poor space utilization, and shorter life cycles. On the software side, miners are forced to piece together multiple tools to manage power scaling, monitoring and diagnostics, creating fragmented and costly operational environments.
Proto Rig aims to directly address these challenges by introducing durable modular designs that convert historically disposable 3-5-year assets into 10-year infrastructure investments. Instead of replacing the entire unit, operators can replace individual hashboards to reduce upgrade costs by 15-20% per cycle. Plus, tool-free in-place repairs allow you to complete fixes in seconds rather than hours or days, significantly reducing downtime.
“The mining hardware hasn’t changed for years,” says Thomas Templeton, Block’s hardware lead. “The machines break frequently, are difficult to repair, are expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and make sure you don’t use the most efficient power and space. With rigs, you can change everything and contribute to the distributed hardware in the process.”
With 1.5 times more power per foot of rack space than traditional hardware, Proto Rig was built for compatibility with both modern and legacy infrastructures, allowing for seamless integration without expensive modifications.
Alongside the hardware, Proto Fleet aims to provide comprehensive open source fleet management software that integrates power scale, monitoring, diagnostics and maintenance tools into a single, intuitive platform.
“The mining industry has not kept up to software advancements more widely,” Templeton said. “We saw an opportunity to modernize mining software that improves operational efficiency, rather than unnecessarily complicating things.”
By making ProtoFleet available to anyone, Block levelles the arenas for mining operators of all sizes, ensuring access to high-quality management tools without the unique lock-in.
The repairability, power efficiency and backward compatibility of Proto Rig, combined with Proto Fleet’s streamlined open source software, helps redefine the economy and accessibility of Bitcoin mining. The launch, along with other initiatives via Square, Cash App, Bitkey and Spiral, further highlights Bloc’s broader commitment to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
