we need Greenland for National Security and even International Security and we’re I said then Canada should be a 51st state tariffs might be dominating the headlines this month but Trump is cooking up something even crazier soon the new t-word will be territory yep Trump’s talk of annexing Allied countries is getting louder and the world is in a shambles over it but isn’t he just saying stuff again what would even be the point and why those countries it’s about time we got to the bottom of this my name is Guy let’s get some answers it’s a miracle less than 50 days into his new term president Trump has already healed a fractured Society after being torn apart by culture wars class Wars and party political divisions few believed it could be done but Trump has United the country like never before I mean it’s not his country it’s Canada and the nation is only United in opposition to his unwanted advances but hey let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth the Canadians are rallying like never before Hallelujah now when it was reported last November that Trump had suggested to the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a private dinner that he simply give Canada to the United States what I’d like to see Canada become our 51st state the whole world had a good old chuckle heck doesn’t he just say the dest things Trudeau later revealed how he himself had a good laugh at the time he told MSNBC that he played along and suggested swapping some of Canada’s territory for California or Hawaii president Trump reportedly didn’t see the funny side of that one but you know no harm done now Trump is prone to hyperbole but he’s also famously unpredictable his public statements and policy pledges often depart from established Norms so drastically that the world is left wondering whether or not they should be interpreted literally Trump’s first term as president showed us that this is a feature and not a bug of his leadership for every extraordinary policy pledge he made on the campaign trail that turned out to be just hot air there was another that he meant very literally and pursued with Vigor for example in 2016 Trump campaigned on an extraordinary pledge to eliminate the US national debt but when he left office in 2021 it was $8 trillion higher there was never a serious effort to make good on this pledge so it can be dismissed as nothing but rhetoric to be fair though there was a global pandemic so there’s that but then there was Trump’s repeated promise to drain the swamp a bold commitment to root out corruption in Washington DC and reduce the influence of special interests and lobbyists notably this included a signature pledge to incarcerate Hillary Clinton but just days after winning the 2016 presidential election Trump said quote I don’t want to hurt the clintons and after assuming office Trump confirmed that he had no intention of pursuing an investigation into Hillary Clinton Trump also had a funny way of draining the swamp that involved appointing exen mobile CEO as Secretary of State not passing any significant anti-corruption legislation and presiding over an increase in lobbying in Washington DC so in hindsight draining the swamp also looks like more empty words however on other occasions Trump’s extraordinary pledges turned out to be sincere in December 2015 he called for quote a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s Representatives can figure out what is going on now this was met with bewilderment and skepticism around the world a common response was you can’t just do that now some Trump supporters suggested critics were being too pedantic about it Trump was a dealmaker a player of Ford chess and you couldn’t appreciate his strategy by nitpicking his every word let the man cook yet after being inaugurated Trump set about doing exactly what he said he would 7 days after taking office Trump signed an executive order enacting what he his AIDS and his critics called a Muslim ban it banned people from seven Muslim majority countries from entering the United States this began a lengthy back and forth with the Supreme Court where judges would tell the president look you can’t just do that and he would make incremental changes to the ban until it was ultimately accepted in 2018 here we saw the president not only making good on his word but doubling down and expending great political capital in order to do so another prominent example was Trump’s pledge to build a wall to seal the US Mexico border after Trump started talking about his border wall idea critics dismissed its feasibility citing logistical financial and diplomatic hurdles some of his allies acknowledged the feasibility concerns and interpreted the wall rhetoric as a symbolic political gesture however Trump meant what he said literally and he stretched the powers of his office to their limits to make it happen he aggressively pursued funding declared a National Emergency in 2019 to redirect federal funds after Congress refused Appropriations and oversaw the construction of over 450 Mi of Border barriers by 2021 on Trump’s first day back in office this year he pledged to finish building the wall and just weeks into his second term he made good on his repeated pledges to introduce massive import taxes on goods from Canada and Mexico now Trump had spoken candidly about his tariff plans for months prior giving markets amp time to price them in and yet when Trump formerly announced his tariffs it sent shock waves through the markets in other words the tariffs had not been priced in indicating widespread disbelief that Trump would really do what he said he was going to do so while Trump has made empty promises before his record is equally full of extraordinary policies that defy Norms of all kinds when the whole world is saying hey you can’t just do that Trump is the guy who goes ahead and does it anyway and this is why his comments about annexing Canada should be taken seriously and not just dismissed when Trump’s private remark to Trudeau was first reported on last November it was laughed off but the laughter quickly turned nervous when in December Trump publicly described the then Canadian Prime Minister as governor of the quote great state of Canada amid Trump’s threats to impose massive tariffs on goods from Canada there was little appetite for rialy north of the Border but Trump just kept on going by early January he began suggesting to quote get rid of the US Canadian border calling it an artificially drawn line he tweeted two images of maps showing Canada as part of the United States and claimed quote many people in Canada love being the 51st state later that month Trump reiterated quote I would love to see Canada become the 51st state and caused further alarm by including in his address during the world economic Forum in Davos quote Canada you could always become a state now the US spends almost 50 times more on defense than Canada does so it could probably conquer Canada quite easily if it wanted to thankfully though when asked by a reporter if he was considering annexing Canada by military force Trump gave airm no however he added that he intended to do so by economic Force Instead This provides important context for Trump’s Canada tariffs now there’s been much confusion about Trump’s motives for launching a trade war against America’s closest Ally his complaints about trade ring Hollow since it was only at his insistence that the US Canada and Mexico scrapped NAFTA for the current usmca Free Trade Agreement back in 2018 meanwhile official rationale about fenel and migration from Canada is transparently false the US is in fact a net exporter of illegal fentanyl to Canada moreover it’s widely accepted that the tariffs are to the benefit of no one in particular and will cause much suffering in the United States so what’s the point well it looks like Trump is just trying to twist Canada’s arm until the whole country begs for Mercy Canada sends 75% of its goods and service exports South of the Border if Americans just stop buying Canada’s economy is completely screwed so the question then becomes what does Trump want well Trump’s rationale for tariffs in general is twofold firstly where trade continues despite the tariffs it’s a big win because the revenue collected from tariffs will make the US quote rich as hell of course the tariffs are paid by American businesses and consumers so it’s only the federal government that could become rich as hell and only to the extent that tariffs make ordinary Americans poor as hell but well let’s not get bogged down in the details now the second reason is that tariffs will get foreign businesses to relocate production to the US this is Trump’s plan to repatriate jobs particularly in manufacturing that were outsourced to wherever the cost of labor was cheapest over the last 50 or so years now protecting and promoting local jobs is a more Orthodox use for tariffs however tariffs intended to accomplish this are normally Limited in scope and targeted at specific often strategically important industries if they’re not used judiciously tariffs can easily do more harm than good but Trump’s tariffs are huge and indiscriminate it’s a sledgehammer approach and it suggests he’s up to something else say using economic Force to Annex Canada like he said he would at least this is what Justin Trudeau claims is happening he said that the purpose of the tariffs is to ush in the quote complete collapse of Canada’s economy in order to Annex the country we have no reason to think he’s exaggerating if the tariffs persist and if they increase the effects on the Canadian economy would be catastrophic the Quebec Premier franois Lago has warned his Province could lose up to 160,000 jobs over the next few months now economic collapse is a Sure Fire recipe for political discontent and and political discontent is a must if you want to affect regime change without spilling too much blood okay so there is some kind of discernible strategy here the tariffs are Trump’s weapon for beating Canada until it doesn’t want to be a country anymore but this still doesn’t answer why Trump wants Canada in the first place I mean it could be about jobs but that’s a funny way of going about it so let me get this straight instead of bringing the jobs to America you bring America to the jobs I have to admit I hadn’t thought of that one so this could be a 9,000 IQ move to increase the number of American jobs by precisely the number of jobs that are currently Canadian however we think what Trump really wants is Canada’s natural resources Trudeau told a private meeting of business and labor leaders in early February that the US is quote very aware aware of our resources of what we have and they very much want to be able to benefit from those but Mr Trump has it in mind that one of the easiest ways of doing that is absorbing our country and it is a real thing now Canada supplies the US with most of its crude oil as us production is not able to meet demand however Canada has something that the US needs even more in the 21st century the real Envy of the continent is Canada’s mineral wealth Canada is home to vast reserves of critical minerals which have been described by the world economic Forum as the quote oil of the 21st century these minerals include rare Metals which are used in increasing quantities in virtually every advanced technology from AI to EVs and high value added steel rare metals are of special strategic importance for weapons manufacturing and Aeronautics as well as in the energy sector where demand is expected to Triple over the next 5 years according to the International Energy agency currently China controls around 60% of Global Production of critical minerals and 85% of processing capacity but since 2018 the US has opted for an adversarial relationship with China and is now desperately trying to unwind the economic interdependence built up since the 1970s establishing new Supply chains for critical minerals has become a high priority so where should the US look well significant deposits exist in South America subsaharan Africa and Eastern and Central Europe but the problem is many of their countries are now wary of the resource curse that underpinned centuries of colonial and neocolonial relationships many of them fought tooth and nail for Independence just a few decades ago and will not roll over easily when us business interests come knocking in 2019 the US and Elon Musk showed the world what they think of countries like this that year the CIA openly backed a bloody coup in Bolivia which is home to the world’s largest reserves of lithium according to deposed former president Evo Morales Washington had not forgiven his country for choosing to seek lithium extraction Partnerships with Russia and China rather than the US Morales also accused Elon Musk of supporting the coup to secure lithium access for Tesla musk half-heartedly denied this but later tweeted quote we will coup whoever we want deal with it anyway more recently you’ll recall that the US has been working on a minerals deal with Ukraine throughout the current war with Russia Ukraine has been advertising its critical mineral deposits as a form of Leverage but importantly it’s not known how much of these are commercially viable moreover it’s not clear that Ukraine is able to provide the critical minerals that the US really wants a draft agreement shows that the Crux of the deal involves Ukraine ring fencing half of future natural resource project revenues for defense spending along with geopolitical and Commercial considerations developing a new supply of critical minerals can be extremely difficult and expensive especially if the reserves are untapped or Worse poorly understood as is the case in Ukraine generally speaking huge investment is needed to open new mines and develop the advanced technical infrastructure needed for extraction refining and processing and this can explain why the Trump Administration is drooling over Canada it has strategic reserves of key critical minerals that the US needs including lithium graphite nickel Cobalt copper and Rare Earth elements it also has the mining and refining infrastructure to exploit them and like it’s right there man instead of dealing with these Bolivian punks why do we just take Canada or you know Greenland yes because it’s easy to miss that between all the trade Waring and crypto shananigans Trump has also been vocal about his desire to get his hands on Greenland the huge Arctic Island that lies off the northeastern coast of Canada now Trump talked about buying Greenland during his first term but this time he’s much more insistent and has refused to rule out seizing the island by military force citing uh US national security reasons this has caused a political crisis in Denmark which colonized Greenland 300 years ago and only granted it the right to self-governance in 1979 now Greenland is physically closer to Washington DC than it is to Copenhagen and is populated by about 57,000 mostly indigenous greenlanders perhaps this is why Trump speaks more openly about his motives regarding Greenland surprise surprise it’s natural resources again Greenland is rich in critical minerals and oil and it also sits close to strategically important shipping lanes in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans the only problem is most greenlanders do not want to be American they don’t even want to be Danish Trump’s recent threats to take the island by force have galvanized an unprecedented independence movement on the island just a few days ago Greenland held parliamentary elections which saw the center right opposition Democratic party gain 30% of the vote with another opposition party narak gain 25% both parties favor independence from Denmark but crucially neither is advocating becoming a US state the island has been largely United by the rallying cry Greenland is not for sale one opposition Party candidate told Associated Press that Trump’s threats were quote an historic moment for Greenland compared to two months ago when nobody was talking about independence now everybody’s talking about it if Trump keeps up his threats he’ll have United two whole Nations albeit one lacking statehood like few modern leaders could ever dream of doing it’s a remarkable if self-defeating accomplishment if Trump was a details guy he’d do well to put the US aid band back together again that would give the CIA the plausible deniability it needs to get the wheels of regime change spinning once more just like in the good old days but there he goes again saying the quiet part out loud man he just says the dest things anyway at the moment the possibility of the US annexing Canada or Greenland seems remote but like I said Trump is unpredictable and tends to defy Norms so let’s just imagine that the US does somehow Annex one or both what on Earth will this do to the markets well in any case annexation will be enforced against the wishes of the annex population and this will be a major turning point in world history so until the dust settles on a new international order risk assets would probably be absolutely slaughtered if you thought the market reacted poorly to the crypto Summit the Strategic Bitcoin reserve and all of the rest of the bullish Trump catalysts You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet territorial takeovers will make tariffs look tepid by comparison I mean can you see eth pumping in response to the US leeting the Canadian government or causing the collapse of NATO by seizing Greenland from Denmark frankly I think three digits would come pretty quick and this would be the least of our worries but do let me know if I’m being too bearish in the comments down below would the expansion of the American Empire actually be a good thing or is the global order about to get completely flipped with World War III the inevitable result I look forward to reading your takes down below and if you got something out of this video conquer that like like button seize the Subscribe and declare war on the notification Bell so you never miss another upload as always thank you for watching and I’ll see you next time this
